Simple Ways to Feel More Present (Without Overthinking It)

Jun 04, 2026Hollie Hunter

There’s a lot of pressure around being “present”.

It gets framed as something you need to learn, practise, or somehow get right - when in reality, it’s much simpler than that.

Being present isn’t about doing more.
It’s about noticing what you’re already doing.

And most of the time, it shows up in everyday moments you’d usually rush past.

Stop trying to optimise every moment

Not everything needs to be productive.

It’s easy to move from one thing to the next - finishing work, checking your phone, thinking about what’s next before you’ve even paused.

But presence often looks like the opposite. It might be:

  • putting your phone down when you get home, even for a little while
  • sitting on the couch after a long day without immediately filling the space
  • watching your kids play without half-paying attention

Nothing big. Just being where you are.

Use everyday moments as reset points

You don’t need to add anything new to your routine. The easiest way to feel more present is to use moments that already exist.

After work, instead of jumping straight into the next thing, sit down for a few minutes.
Make a cup of tea and actually stop.

In the middle of the day, step away briefly instead of pushing through.

Even something as simple as reaching out to a friend - a message, a quick call - can shift you back into the moment.

These small resets are often enough.

Pay attention to how you eat

Food is one of the easiest ways to practise this. Not by changing what you eat - but by changing how you experience it.

Instead of eating while distracted:

  • sit down properly
  • take your time
  • notice what you’re having

It might be something small - a biscuit with tea, a quick dessert, something simple at the end of the day.

At The Mindful Bakery, this idea sits behind so much of what we do - that food doesn’t need to be complicated to feel special, it just needs your attention.

Simple ways to bring yourself back into the moment

You don’t need a routine or a full reset to feel more present.

Most of the time, it’s just small habits that gently bring your attention back to where you are, without making a big deal of it.

  • put your phone down for a few minutes
  • sit instead of standing when you eat or drink
  • focus on one thing at a time
  • take a proper first sip or bite and notice it
  • step outside briefly for fresh air
  • look up and notice something around you
  • reach out to someone, even just a quick message
  • pause for a moment before moving on to the next thing

None of these take much time.

They’re just small ways of reminding yourself to be where you already are.

You don’t need to get it right

There’s no perfect version of being present. Some days will feel calm, others won’t.

The goal isn’t to do it perfectly; it’s just to notice when you can come back to the moment you’re already in.

A few minutes here and there is enough. More than enough.
