You Don’t Have to Earn Rest: A Gentle Reminder This Mental Health Week

May 21, 2026Hollie Hunter

There’s a quiet pressure that shows up in everyday life.

The feeling that you need to finish everything first.
That rest comes after productivity.
That you have to earn the right to stop.

So you keep going. One more task. One more email. One more thing to tick off before you allow yourself a break. And somehow, the break never quite comes.

A different way to think about it

Rest isn’t something you earn. It’s something you need.

Not because you’ve completed everything, but because you’re human, and you can’t keep going indefinitely without pausing.

This is something that often gets overlooked, especially when life feels full. It’s easy to fall into the habit of pushing through, telling yourself you’ll slow down later.

But later has a way of moving further away.

What rest can actually look like

It doesn’t have to mean stopping everything or taking a full day off.

Sometimes, it’s much smaller than that.

  • sitting down for a few minutes without doing anything
  • stepping outside and getting some air
  • putting your phone away and giving your mind a break
  • letting yourself pause mid-task, without finishing it

These moments might seem insignificant, but they’re often the ones that help the most.

During Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week (11–17 May) is often filled with advice - routines, habits, things to improve or optimise.

But sometimes the most helpful reminder is a simple one:

You don’t need to do more.

You don’t need to fix everything at once.

You don’t need to be at your best all the time.

Letting things be unfinished

There’s something uncomfortable about stopping before everything is done. But there’s also something freeing about it.

Letting a task wait.
Leaving something unfinished.
Choosing to rest anyway.

Not because everything is complete, but because you are.

A final thought

You’re allowed to pause in the middle of the day.

You’re allowed to take a break before you feel completely exhausted.

You’re allowed to rest, even when there’s still more to do.

Not as a reward.

Just as something you need.
